Sorry Julian this was in response to another person who said I could use
it
with windows mail... but as it's a hotmail account it won't work either.

Nonsense. Gmail is Gmail and NOT hotmail.

So... are we talking about a Hotmail address or GMail? I don't understand
why you're talking about Hotmail now when the thread has been about GMail.

Did you check the password authentication for your GMail settings?

Each to their own.

Jenn is turning out to be a thoroughly unreliable witness.

Hi Neil

You said it in an earlier post with windows live mail. I was just explaining
that I had tried that.
Yes I did check the password authentification settings on my gmail.

And the box for that setting was checked or unchecked?
The error message you got means that Secure Password Authentication
was enabled when it shouldn't be.

Should work OK under Vista, mine certainly is and a lot of others, so this
is not a Win Mail problem. There is a very clear write up with screen shots
on the G-Mail page (I am sure you have been there).

Assume you have NOT got a tick under LOG ON USING SECURE PASSWORD
AUTHENTICATION at the SERVERS Tab and that you DO have a tick in the MY
SERVER REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION in the same screen? On that last one, the
settings are just to "use the same as your Incoming Mail".

Under the ADVANCED Tab 465 and 995 for the ports with ticks in the SECURE
Boxes?

Finally at the G-Mail page you have to activate that you are using POP3.

And of course what ever Firewall you are using is not blocking those ports??
