global template already open

I am running Word 2002 from the network. Each user has a normal.dot template
in their folder "Username/Application Data/Microsoft/Templates". There are
no other normal.dot files on the server.

When I start Word, I am getting a message " The global template, normal.dot,
is already open as an add-in program". I click OK and the program seems to
function normally.

Why would I get this error and how can I make it stop? TIA

Just a guess, but maybe one of the startup directories contains a shortcut
to normal.dot, or maybe the file locations for the user's start up directory
and user templates directory point to the same place (Username/Application
Data/Microsoft/Templates)?

(The guess is that Word is trying to load Normal.dot explicitly as an add-in
on start up - Normal.dot will be found in the user templates directory, but
it is a special file which behaves both as a document template (for blank
docs) and as a global add-in (for customizations etc.)

Thanks Margaret, you are right. I had my startup directory the same as my
templates directory.
