GINA logon w/ Logon Message Error

M

MrsWWonka

Hi all, Yes, I'm a newbie and this is my very first post, so I hope I d
everything right....here goes....

When I reboot my computer, I have two windows that pop up....
the back on is a log on window titled
GINA Logon and it has two spaces...

User Name (and Administrator is filled in)
Password (blank)

but the second window pops up over it and it says...

Logon Message
Unable to log you on because of an account restriction
I can then click ok and it will boot

If I don't sit here and hit the enter button a million times, th
Windows loading screen comes up over them both and it can take 30 min
or more for it to come up with my User choices (1 being my name and
being Guest). Sometimes I have to reboot 10 times or more to get tha
enter button hit at just the right time so that I can click thru th
error message and load my computer to get back to work. I'm gettin
really tired of doing this and hate to reboot no matter what because o
it.

I found a solution on the Microsoft support site, but the first thin
it tells you to do is ...
1. Click START, point to RUN, type gpedit.msc, then click ok...
so I have tried this a million times and I do not have a file title
gpedit.msc. I just get another message telling me that it can't b
found.
The other option it offered was to set a user password, so I went int
the user that is my name and set a password, but it didn't chang
anything.. it still comes up with the boxes mentioned above. Of course
when I saw the word GINA, I thought a neighbor was stealing my interne
or something crazy like that ! :) Then I read that its a legitimat
file name.
Can someone help me figure this out so that I can shut my computer dow
at times without the worry or endless wait for it to be accessabl
again?
Thanks so much

I think because you may Have Windows XP Home Edition not XP Pro?.
This for XP Home Edition:
Error Message: Unable to Log You on Because of an Account Restriction
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290109
This for XP pro if you have it:
Error Message: Unable to Log You on Because of an Account Restriction
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303846

Another one to try is open a run command and type in:
regsvr32 shgina.dll CLICK [OK]
Reboot your machine and see if it will resolve the problem.

If still no joy try to delete the GINADLL entry from the Registry but back
this Key before you go ahead and modify the Registry (just the Key).
Open a run command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK} on the Registry Editor locate this KEY:
[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft \Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \
Winlogon = in the Right Delete the GINADLL
HTH.
Let us know.

Ok, first Thank You for responding to my post!
Second, I'm stuck again ....
I tried the first of your suggestions, went to the correct help pag
and followed the instructions for the Home Edition (Thank you!), but i
didn't change the fact that the windows came up.
Then...
I tried the second suggestion with the Run Command.
After rebooting, the windows still came up, but now they don't mentio
GINA.
The first window says :

Password : (now has the password that I had set in the first attempt t
correct from the correct Home edition page)

The second window is the same as before :
Logon Message
Unable to log you on because of an account restriction.

Again, I have to sit and hit the enter key AFTER the lights on m
keyboard flash in the hope to hit it at just the right time that i
catches those windows and doesn't go into the Windows loading screen
or I can't go behind it to clear them and my computer just sits. I
takes up to 10 times to get it just right sometimes. Very frustrating

I was afraid to try the last suggestion because it dealt with the GIN
DLL file and its not mentioning GINA now. Should I still try it? Are
the instructions that you show, also including the way to back it up as
you suggested?
I get scared when messing with files! LOL!
Thanks again !!

Hi,
Try this Fix from here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 45 - 2nd column Restore the welcome screen GINA>DLL error .

Look in the Event Viewer for any error messages (X) can help to shed some
lights on other causer for the error.
But mainly the error mean you don't have privileges.

Sorry, still showing the second pair of windows ... the ones not
mentioning GINA. It went directly into them so I didn't have to reboot
10 times, but that happens on occasion anyways.
If there's any info I'm leaving out or if taking a pic of the screen
would help, please let me know.

Ok, finally got back from running errands and was ready to get this
issue taken care of and when I went to the directories

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft \Windows NT
\CurrentVersion\Winlogon = in the Right Delete the GINADLL

there isn't a file on the right with the name GINADLL or any GINA for
that matter. I took a pic of what IS there so here is a link to the
pic.

http://tinyurl.com/3x32j9

any suggestions? or am I missing something???? maybe I missed a step in
the directory, but I went into the other dirs shown below Winlogon and
there isn't any mentioned there either. I can do a search for any GINA
files if need be, but since it looks like they are showing up in a
"unusual" place (as opposed to Explore dirs), then I figured it
probably won't show them in a regular search either.

Thanks!

Unable to log you on because of an account restriction.

Again, I have to sit and hit the enter key AFTER the lights on my
keyboard flash in the hope to hit it at just the right time that it
catches those windows and doesn't go into the Windows loading
screen,
or I can't go behind it to clear them and my computer just sits. It
takes up to 10 times to get it just right sometimes. Very
frustrating!

I was afraid to try the last suggestion because it dealt with the
GINA
DLL file and its not mentioning GINA now. Should I still try it? Are
the instructions that you show, also including the way to back it up
as
you suggested?
I get scared when messing with files! LOL!

Well, if you done which I'm thinking and the KB mentioned then you will get
this error:
If you assign the Built-in Administrator a password and you are using it to
log in you will get this error.
Try to create another Account with Admin privileges and see if 6the error
will occur with this Account/profile.

Ok, tried that but still get the windows. I did, however, think to tak
a pic of what exactly I'm seeing when the windows come up incase I'
missing some info when posting.
Here is the pic :

http://tinyurl.com/26n39p

May or may not help, but figured it couldn't hurt.
As you can see, they are no longer referring to GINA, but just to "Lo
On", if that makes a difference.

The error is still referring to the Administrator (by name) account
not any of the actual accounts I see when I boot up (Guest, MyName
AdminTest (just created) ), one with just the name Administrato
doesn't show.

Also, can you maybe tell me how to STOP the long list of my ID at th
bottom of the posts? Every time I add a post, it adds one to the botto
and lets face it, this is a long enough thread already :) I looked fo
a place to uncheckmark "add signature" but didnt' find it.

keyboard flash in the hope to hit it at just the right time that it
catches those windows and doesn't go into the Windows loading
screen,
or I can't go behind it to clear them and my computer just sits. It
takes up to 10 times to get it just right sometimes. Very
frustrating!

I was afraid to try the last suggestion because it dealt with the
GINA
DLL file and its not mentioning GINA now. Should I still try it? Are
the instructions that you show, also including the way to back it up
as
you suggested?
I get scared when messing with files! LOL!
Thanks again !!

Okay, did you named the other account Administrator or something different?.
The Pic refer to an Admin, when I mentioned new admin account I meant
another account with different name say like Nass with admin privileges
assigned to it.
Does this a new installation?.
about your Signatures, what under the Signatures Tab on your Outlook, what
your settings:
[ ] Add Signatures to all outgoing messages
[ ] Don't add signatures to Replies and forwards

and if you look in the signatures box is it one signature?.
You can Delete and create a new one and see if that will help.
Does this computer connect to Remote Access service like VPN?.
Make sure your system clean by scanning and run this command:
sfc /scannow in your Run command.

Ok, tried that but still get the windows. I did, however, think to take
a pic of what exactly I'm seeing when the windows come up incase I'm
missing some info when posting.
Here is the pic :

http://tinyurl.com/26n39p

May or may not help, but figured it couldn't hurt.
As you can see, they are no longer referring to GINA, but just to "Log
On", if that makes a difference.

The error is still referring to the Administrator (by name) account,
not any of the actual accounts I see when I boot up (Guest, MyName,
AdminTest (just created) ), one with just the name Administrator
doesn't show.

Also, can you maybe tell me how to STOP the long list of my ID at the
bottom of the posts? Every time I add a post, it adds one to the bottom
and lets face it, this is a long enough thread already :) I looked for
a place to uncheckmark "add signature" but didnt' find it.

Thanks!

Try to create a new account with Admin privileges and see if the error
will
produce itself with that.
To create a new account click Start Control Panel User Accounts and
Click Create a new Account.

Well, if you done which I'm thinking and the KB mentioned then you

If you assign the Built-in Administrator a password and you are

Try to create another Account with Admin privileges and see if 6the

Ok, finally got back from running errands and was ready to get this
issue taken care of and when I went to the directories

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft \Windows NT
\CurrentVersion\Winlogon = in the Right Delete the GINADLL

there isn't a file on the right with the name GINADLL or any GINA
for
that matter. I took a pic of what IS there so here is a link to the
pic.

http://tinyurl.com/3x32j9

any suggestions? or am I missing something???? maybe I missed a step
in
the directory, but I went into the other dirs shown below Winlogon
and
there isn't any mentioned there either. I can do a search for any
GINA
files if need be, but since it looks like they are showing up in a
"unusual" place (as opposed to Explore dirs), then I figured it
probably won't show them in a regular search either.

Thanks!

Sorry, still showing the second pair of windows ... the ones not
mentioning GINA. It went directly into them so I didn't have to
reboot
10 times, but that happens on occasion anyways.
If there's any info I'm leaving out or if taking a pic of the screen
would help, please let me know.
I appreciate you help and suggestions alot !

Hi all, Yes, I'm a newbie and this is my very first post, so I hope
I
do
everything right....here goes....

If I don't sit here and hit the enter button a million times, the
Windows loading screen comes up over them both and it can take 30
mins
or more for it to come up with my User choices (1 being my name and
1
being Guest). Sometimes I have to reboot 10 times or more to get
that
enter button hit at just the right time so that I can click thru the
error message and load my computer to get back to work. I'm getting
really tired of doing this and hate to reboot no matter what because
of
it.

I found a solution on the Microsoft support site, but the first
thing
it tells you to do is ...
1. Click START, point to RUN, type gpedit.msc, then click ok...
so I have tried this a million times and I do not have a file titled
gpedit.msc. I just get another message telling me that it can't be
found.
The other option it offered was to set a user password, so I went
into
the user that is my name and set a password, but it didn't change
anything.. it still comes up with the boxes mentioned above. Of
course,
when I saw the word GINA, I thought a neighbor was stealing my
internet
or something crazy like that ! :) Then I read that its a
legitimate
file name.
Can someone help me figure this out so that I can shut my computer
down
at times without the worry or endless wait for it to be accessable
again?
Thanks so much!

I think because you may Have Windows XP Home Edition not XP Pro?.
This for XP Home Edition:
Error Message: Unable to Log You on Because of an Account
Restriction
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290109
This for XP pro if you have it:
Error Message: Unable to Log You on Because of an Account
Restriction

Another one to try is open a run command and type in:
regsvr32 shgina.dll CLICK [OK]
Reboot your machine and see if it will resolve the problem.

If still no joy try to delete the GINADLL entry from the Registry
but
back
this Key before you go ahead and modify the Registry (just the Key).
Open a run command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK} on the Registry Editor locate this KEY:
[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft \Windows NT \
CurrentVersion
\
Winlogon = in the Right Delete the GINADLL

Ok, first Thank You for responding to my post!
Second, I'm stuck again ....
I tried the first of your suggestions, went to the correct help
page
and followed the instructions for the Home Edition (Thank you!), but
it
didn't change the fact that the windows came up.
Then...
I tried the second suggestion with the Run Command.
After rebooting, the windows still came up, but now they don't
mention
GINA.
The first window says :

LOG ON TO WINDOWS
User : Administrator
Password : (now has the password that I had set in the first attempt
to
correct from the correct Home edition page)

The second window is the same as before :
Logon Message
Unable to log you on because of an account restriction.

Yes, I named the new account AdminTest and gave it Administrato
Privileges. It was a new account, I only had the 2 to begin with.
In regards to my Signature question, the only Outlook I know of is fo
email and I don't use it. I was referring to this thread. In my option
on here the signature is blank. I must have misread or somethin
because before I saw " --MrsWWonka" about 6 times in a row. That wa
what I was referring to.
I don't know what VPN is. I had set up a network between this compute
and the one my Mom works on right next to me. She scans comics while
post them and other things as well, but life happened and I have ye
the chance to use it.
I will try the other step that you mentioned here shortly.
Thanks!
P.S. We used too many characters, so I removed one of my posts tha
didn't have much but the link to the pic. Hope this is ok.
