Gimpshop is a special pack of gimp, and it is available crosplatform, I
use the windows version, in win98se.

This is the first gimp derivate that is stable and usable under my
win98se.
It starts slowly, but is very capable, an infinity of tools and
effects.

The only thing that irritates me, there is no quick resize the brush
control, or I haven't found it.

Does it have any good painting brushes, or is it just a filter app &
photo editor?

It is a full featured paint program with brushes just like gimp.

It is another way to package the gimp, as far as I understand.
I haven't used it much, because I have other paint programs which I
like better, but it is very stable under win98se, which the gimp isn't.

(Fwiw, Gimp's stable under NT-based winderz)

Gimpshop is considered by a lot of peeps in the Gimp community to be a
fork. It's an interesting implementation that flattens the learning
curve a bit but when it comes time to discuss things w/other Gimp'ers I
found it to be more of a barrier than a help.
