When I open a web site with GIF files, while waiting for the GIF to
download, there is a red cross in the space.

This is a new computer with XP SP1 installed. On the previous computer (also
XP SP1), I did not get these red crosses. This prompts the question, is
there an option somewhere to remove these red crosses?

It is not a problem, just curious :-)

Actually, it was a small icon not a cross. I solved the issue by unchecking
"Show Image Download Placeholders" in "Properties/Advanced". The red crosses
only appear if the GIF does not download.
