I wasn't doing anything, I swear.

I use Powerdesk 5 as a replacement for Windows Explorer.

I was going through a bunch of zip files in one of my subdirectories. Left click, right
click, use Winzip to open. No problems.

All of a sudden it would close Powerdesk every time I tried to right click and give me a
message saying an automatic error log was being created.

I tried Windows Explorer with the same results.

Both programs will allow me to move files, and I can open them if I use Winzip or Winrar
directly, but collapse if I right click or try to delete by marking the file (left click)
and hitting delete.

I can also run from the start menu command and delete from the command prompt.

I reinstalled Powerdesk 5 and still get the same errors.

I decided to do some disk cleanup with System Mechanic 4 in case there was a problem
somewhere.

I checked for invalid links, deleted the invalid links. Still no problem.

I checked for garbage file, .bak, .tmp, etc. Then deleted them.

I did a registry scan and deleted all the invalid references in the registry. Yes, I
checked the list before the delete and there wasn't anything even remotely useful. Most
were old programs that I have uninstalled in the past. Yes I created a backup.

Then I did a reboot. That's when the real problems started.

At startup you get the graphical Windows 2000 Pro sign that at the bottom says loading
windows, or something like that, and a few other things.

Then it goes to the desktop.

Now any words that are generated by Windows and are not part of a graphic are giberish.
Unrecognized characters. It is like it is displaying in a different language but I don't
have the language pack installed.

The Desktop now has big icons and Writing that seems to be in bold.

Any program I launch with writing (ie text bar menu) is also big and bold. Pretty much
everything past that is in giberish.

I opened System Mechanic and went back to the registry cleaner... giberish.

I opened System mechanic on my laptop and used it as a map to find out the buttons to push
and did a restore of the backed up registry. Then I did a restart. Still giberish.

I restored the backup again, in case I had made an error. Did a restart, still giberish.

Right now it's running checkdisk, but I don't think that's going to solve anything..

HELP!!!!! I have a lot of files on there and no backup. I could do a backup and burn it
onto a cd, but all the screens are giberish so I can't read what to do.

Any ideas????????

Boot to safe mode.

Does the problem persist?

Remove the hard drive from the problem PC, slave it into the computer on
which you are creating / reading your posts; harvest your data.

Scan for viri. Contact PowerDesk support.

Dump system mechanic. Bill Gates is smart & rich. If system mechanics or
norton utilites prevented Windows problems or fixed Windows problems to any
signifcant extent, Bill would have purchased the companies / products &
included the products into Windows.
