Ghost clone problem

T

Tony

I've used Ghost 2003 to clone the 120Gb fromn my 80Gb that has XP amnd 98SE
on it
(8SE loads fin, but XP stops at a screen which looks like
the screen shown on shutdown (the one with the 'saving settings' etc
messages superimposed).

This happens whenever I try to boot the machine from the new disc, even
after repeating the cloning process.

The only time I seem to have any success is when I leave the original disc
connected.

Anyone got any ideas?

After a copy, the XP registry of the new drive points to many files on the
old
drive. It is necessary to swap the letters of the original XP partition and
of the new XP partition in the registry of the new XP using
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q223188 .

Thanks Georges

Diews this still apply , if after the clone is doine, I shut the PC down and
disconnect the old drive, leaving the new drive to boot up? As Ghost runs in
DOS, Windows hasnt been actve. My Disk as
C 98
D Data
G Win XP

I wasnt surew if the clone would elave the drive letters the same, byt both
Window start up as normal, just that XP woiuldnt go past a certain point

I;ll read you url now

Just read your site Georges. As I dont go to Windows after the clone, but
after I am on one disk again, is it possiblke that fixing the signaturevis
the only thing I need t do? I can do this from the 98SE Windows.

What proceedure takes care of that isue?

After you remove the old drive be sure to move the new drive over to the
same IDE cable and plug that the old drive was connected to before
trying to boot the system. So that the new drive is connected to the
exact same HD controller an IDE port number that the old drive was on.

I thought that you had done a copy of the files using Ghost because in this
case the original disk is needed to boot on the new disk (as you wrote in
your first message). If the cloning is done by Ghost (outside XP with copy
of disk signature and partition identifiers) as I understand from your
second message, the new system can operate on the new disk with the same
letters (only if the original disk is not present) and I do not know why you
cannot boot and what to do to correct this situation as you ask in your
third message.

connected.

That's because it is booting from the original disc.
After you clone a HD you have to place the new HD (120) in the same physical
location as the old one (80). Windows expects to find the HD on a specific
IDE channel.
