Getting updates

My Defender has just been downloaded and installed. I get a message saying
my file definitions haven't been checked in 63 days. When I do all that
Microsoft says to do to get these updates I still get nothing. I've
installed the active-x program that SUPPOSED to allow you to get updates but
I get nothing. What do you have to do to get these file definitions updated??

Thanks,

Jack

Jack,

I had this same problem when I downloaded the program last night...in my
reading here it sounds as though others have had the same problems, but I
haven't found a solution yet.

Hi Tom,

Hello Butter,

if you extracted it you must have a map with the name "Dial-a-fix-full"
and that contains 10 files, the start program is "Dial-a-fix.exe"

Tom,

I'd like to know about this suggestion. As of today my Defender says I
haven't updated the deffinitons in 15 days.(Heck, I thought Defender was
suppose to check for updates before it scanned)

I've been to WIDOWS UPDATE 3 times today, actually restarted this system 2
times & have powered the system down once with no results.

The update is downloaded but will not install.

I've tried all of the little fixes here, but no luck. Dial-a-fix seemed like
it went out and fixed a few things, but still no luck. I've installed it on
3 test machines at the office and they all of the same problem, and none of
these suggestions fixed any of them. I'm on a network behind a firewall, but
we're moderately liberal on Internet access, so I'm not thinking its a
firewall issue. Any other suggestions?

Hi Steve;
Bill Sanderson has suggested a manual update by using a captured update URL
from an updated machine. If you'd like to give it a try here's the URL
that resulted in WD definition update 1.14.1361.6 for me earlier today:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.c..._4e83a7b73b996f20e0944bba20381ec2d679925f.exe

Although I'm unsure if you'd first have to remove your currently installed
WD definitions using the information in:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

Perhaps a kick-start like this will get you going, let us know please, but
I'd suspect it has more to do with proxy settings if your behind a
corporate firewall or whether WSUS is enabled for Windows defender
definitions by your Administrator as documented in these forums.

Dave, this worked without a hitch. Before I did the manual update, which
will become time costly with my network computers, I did a little poking
around. I noticed under Tools -> System Explorer -> Network Connected
Programs, that Defender was connected to an external address on port 443. I
checked my firewall and found that I was only allowing port 443 to access my
Macromedia Breeze Server. So I opened that port up to All_Internal. I also
added Windows Defender as an exception in Windows Firewall and port 443. I
thought for sure this would fix the problem. I did the same on the other two
machines that were having problems. No luck... same dad-gummed error....

Outta luck in Phoenix....

I have not uninstalled defender. But it still will not update. I tried the
fix you suggested, but it said the uninstaller was not available.

Hi Schowalla:

Engel sums it up pretty well in this newsgroup on 04/02 in RE: Message for
Engel - RE: Definition update 1.14.1353.2 - KB915597, as the repair
procedures and order to try them in for correcting failed updates:

"Can you go to Windows Update, do an Express scan, and apply all offered
updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Follow these steps, even though the original cause of the problem appears
not to apply.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915105

In general, if that KB (KB 915105) procedure fails with an error message,
the next thing to try is the Windows Installer cleanup tool:
Windows Installer cleanup tool: read the info carefully before using:"

Hi schowalla;
Believe you mean Windows Live One Care, and if I understand you correctly,
there is no direct relationship between those updates and Defender updates.
One Care and Defender only talk to each other superficially, as in One Care
telling Defender to start a scan or monitoring Defenders operating status.
The update mechanism is independent of each other as far as I know, though
I personally have both installed, updating on their own, and both are
operational without conflict.
