Getting started - help a noob

hello all. i am looking to start up a pretty simple band website. i have winxp, fp2002. i've never done this and have downloaded a few free templates from microsoft.com. i'm just getting into it, but the templates seem to make it difficult to edit different things like background pictures etc

my question is this: any advice on how to proceed, should i use a template or not? if yes, what's a good basic one that is easy to edit? (and free ) i just want to have pics and links to listen to our music. perhaps a song playing in the background, which i already figured that out (i think

there are a zillion templates out there, some free, some cheep, some expensive (not really if you consider the time it will save you). If you're gonna go that route find one that is a template not a theme (themes will drive you coocoo..imo). Then disect it see how it works before you spend time creating your masterpiece. Once you understand ... then build your site and publish it. Just my 2 euro.

background sound doesn't work in some browsers...and it's annoying to some people, consider an alternative.

And remember...KISS.

If you are complete newby, do the Tutorial in the FP manual (GASP!). If you
do not have it, one used to be available for download at microsoft.com. I
never read manuals but this time I did. I was a complete neophyte 3 yrs ago
and am self-taught. I could never have done even a simple web site if I had
not done the project in the Manual and learned the navigation rules. And I
also depended on help from this great newsgroup when I had a question or
problem I could not solve...

If you want to use a different background on a page, you have to disable the
Theme on that page. .. Millie

start simple and work your way up...and keep your channel set to this station

go to www.pixelmill.com and buy the nicest FrontPage template you can
afford.
this way you'll look like a pro from the start (to most people). If you
decide you want to really learn how to make webs I don't think there's a
better way than looking at the code and deconstructing a well made template
in design view.

Took me maybe two nights to do the Tutorial. It was well worth every minute
and therefore less of that trial and error you mention. This taught me the
basics and I have since learned much more (still learning). I still keep
things simple on the web sites I do--makes it easier for visitors to
navigate........ Millie
