My new Dell computer came with a trial version of McAfee Security center.
I
uninstalled it and removed every reference to it from the registry. Now ZA
tells me that "McAfee is trying to access the Internet". Therefore
something
is left over. How can I find it and delete it?

Try a registry cleaner. This one is free:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html
I use it and it works VERY well.

After you get it installed, launch the program and click on Clean the
Registry. Make sure you the select the option to "scan drives for old exe
entries in registry".

Hope this helps,

First, search your system for all folders contaning the name "McAfee" and
delete them. Make sure that you enable the option to search for hidden
folders. If you cannot delete all of them at once, do the remaining steps,
reboot your machine, and then return to this step.

Second, type "msconfig" in the Run dialog box, select the Startup tab, and
uncheck the box next to any file that looks like a McAfee file or program.
You can usually tell by looking at the file name or looking at the registry
key next to the box.

Third, and this step is optional and -- warning! -- dangerous if you don't
know how to edit the registry manually (note: you have been warned, and also
create a restore point just in case you really do screw the pooch), open the
registry using regedit, navigate to the registry key that you unchecked in
step 2, make double dog sure it really is a McAfee file, and then delete it.
Then search the software registry key under the HKLM and HKCU keys for
"McAfee" and delete them, too. Again, this step is strictly optional, but
if you do it right it is 99.9 percent guaranteed to solve your problem.

Fourth, type "services.msc" in the Run dialog and then look for a service
with McAfee in the name (I'm guessing that McAfee installs services, although
haven't used McAfee software on my machine in years). Set it to "disabled."

Fifth, reboot the machine and see if the problem disappears.
