Getting rid of McAfee Security Center residue

E

Ellis

I had been using Windows 98SE with AOL 9.0 Security
Edition, McAfee VirusScan 2005, and McAfee Security Suite
2005. Then I Upgraded to WindowsXP Home Edition, in
ignorance whereof I clicked.

The first time I started WindowsXP, I got a warning
message that "The version of McAfee Security Center that
is installed on your computer is designed for a different
operating system. If you recently updated your computer
from one operating system to another (for example
Windows98 to WindowsXP) please uninstall the Security
Center, restart your computer, and then reinstall McAfee
Security Center to get the correct version for your
operating system."

There is no uninstallation utility for McAfee. I used
the "Search" command to locate all files with McAfee in
the name, and then right-clicked and deleted those -
except for McAfee.com. In that case, the uninstallation
process began, and then came to a silent screeching halt.
The screen displayed "Cannot delete mcagntps.dll: Access
denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use."

The path to mcagntps.dll is:
C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\Agent\

There are 205 files,34 Folders in Agent, and the
Description of the stumbling block file is: McAfee Agent
Proxy Stub.dll. In my extensive ignorance of computer
affairs, I dare not try to delete Agent.

I would prefer not to backup the hard drive, reformat it,
reinstall Windows98SE, and then upgrade again to
WindowsXP.

HELP, PLEASE

Have you tried looking in control panel, add or remove
programs?

McAfee's website may have a removal utility as well.

.
Thanks Mike, but I had already deleted pertinent files
that were accessible via the Add/Remove feature of the
Windows Control Center and found McAfee.com is
invulnerable to that weapon/tool. I prowled the Internet
for McAfee help today (one day later than the failed
initial effort) hoping to find like a removal tool, and
sent an e-mail for McAfee Tech Support, which is supposed
to be forthcoming in 24 hours. In my original post, I
neglected to mention that I had already appealed to
Microsoft for help via e-mail, using up one of the two
Freebie assists due me as part of my purchase price for
the Windows Upgrade software. Microsoft acknowledged that
request a day later and promised An answer to my request
would be provided still one more day after that. I am
hoping that either Microsoft or McAfee will provide a
solution to my problem.
