Getting out of DOS

My computer was started in DOS by holding down the shift
key during startup (by mistake). How do I get back to
windows? When I shut down, it starts in dos again. Typing
"exit" from the dos prompt doesn't work either.
 
What operating system are you using? If 9x
a/ This is about XP (where there is no dos to get to) not 95/98/ME
b/ Try win /wx instead of exit.
