immediately after spyware and hijacker software made its
way into my PC. I've downloaded all the right software
but my PC still thinks it needs more RAM. I have 512K
which should be more than enough.

It's not a reference to physical memory but the amount of available free
space on your hard drive and how the pagefile is set to use it. Try the
following, open Control Panel, open System, go to the Advanced tab, click
settings under Performance, the Advanced tab, click Change under Virtual
Memory, select "System Managed Size," click set, reboot the system and see
if you still get such a warning.

If yes, how much free space do you have on the system drive and do you have
Norton System Tools installed with the Norton Protected Recycle bin enabled?
