Getting Blue Screen After CPU Change

Hi Guys,

Need your help on this serious problem. I recently upgraded the CPU from an
AMD Athlon XP 1700 to an AMD Athlon XP 2600. Boot up and start up was ok.
Then I ran a program, Spybot Search and Destroy, to test the new processor.
Just after 2 minutes of scanning I got the blue screen. The Stop Error was
given as IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0X0000000A. I restart the PC and tested it
with another program, AdAware, which scan through without a hitch. I then did
a 3rd test with Windows Defender and got the blue screen after about 30
minutes of scanning - same Stop Error. I went on to do a 4th test, running
avast anti-virus and got the blue screen after about 1 hour of scanning. All
this while if I don't run these programs, I was able to use StarOffice, surf
the web with IE without getting the blue screen.

After the 4th test, I uninstalled Spybot, Windows Defender and avast. I then
re-installed avast from a fresh download of the program and ran the scan
which completed without a hitch. Re-installation of Spybot and Windows
Defender still caused the blue screen.

Next, I tested with a system program - Backup. I did a full backup of my
harddrive and it completed the task in 1 hour, faster than the previous
processor, without any problem. But, a subsequent test with WinASO Registry
Optimizer showed that there is still something wrong with my system. I am
using the trial copy of WinASO Registry Optimizer and thus was only able to
clean 10 junk registry items each time. So, to clear a bunch of these junks I
need to run the program a few times. The blue screen usually comes on after
the 3rd run of WinASO Registry Optimizer, although I could run this program
about 10 times in Safe Mode without a problem.

In my effort to resolve this problem I consulted a technician from AMD and
was advised to do a quick repair of my Windows XP OS. I ran the XP quick
repair with the CD. It went through the initial process of deleting the
existing drivers and systems files, and then started to load new files when
the blue screen hit me again! The Stop Error was
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0X00000001. Though I could restart my PC, I am
running on an incomplete OS. I can only set my screen to 800x600. When I set
higher, the screen is completely distorted at the sides. When I opened the
System Properties dialogue box, the box opened up was blank - no system
information and no tabs at the top!

Hope somebody can help!

My system details are:
M/B: PCChips M810DLU v7.5a
BIOS: AMIBIOS 030807S Released 04/10/2003
Chipset: SiS 740 rev1
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2600

CPU Speed 133/133MHz

Hi JS,

Thanks for your response.

No I did not monitor the CPU temperature, cos I don't know that I should and
I don't know how.

Kindly advise.

Many thanks.

Also are you still using the old memory?
The 2600 will have a faster FSB and the RAM needs to support it.

Hi JS, Kenny,

Thank you for attending to my plea for help.

Heatsink/fan was not upgraded. The existing fan was apparently suitable for
the new CPU. The store technician who upgraded the CPU did not think it
necessary to upgrade to a higher-spec fan.

In the case of my problem, is heat a probable cause? This is because the
problem doesn't seemed random, that is, the blue screen consistently appears
when I used certain programs, like Windows Defender, Spybot, WinAso registry
Optimizer, and when I ran the Windows XP Cd to try to do a quick repair.
Other programs and activities worked without problem, including IE and WMP.

My RAM is upgraded from 2 strips of 256MB 266 DDR to 2 strips of Corsair
512MB 466 DDR a week before I upgraded the CPU. The new RAM operated without
problem with the old CPU.

Many thanks.

Cheers

Three tools that may help:
1) Try running Memtest86+, this runs from a boot disk and should eliminate
or
confirm if your ram is bad. Let it run for as long as you can, 2,4,6,8 or
more hours,
if no errors by then your ram is OK. See: http://www.memtest.org/

2) PassMark's burn-in test, allows you to test CPU, Memory, Disk, Etc.
Trial version available: http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm

3) SpeedFan, displays Voltages, Fan speeds, CPU Temp, Etc.
See: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Note: Fan speed alone is not the only criteria, if heat sink is improper or
too small the CPU may still be running too hot.

Hi JS,

Thanks for your suggestions.

1) I have done the memtest prior to posting here. Damn PC hung after memtest
ran for about 1 hour. Error message indicated that something interrupted the
memtest op.

2) I'll take note of the Passmark test.

3) I've checked the CPU temp from BIOS. Temp seems okay at about 52'C or
about 122'F.

Btw, the problem I had seems like a tough one to resolve. So, I got myself a
new PC. Traded in the old one and paid SGD$400 (about US$265) for a new one
with the following specs:
Pentium D 2.8 Ghz
Socket 775 1066MHz FSB M/B
16x DVD RW
1 G DDR2 RAM
80 GB HDD
Multi-card reader
500W Power Unit

Now I don't have that frustrating problem and the new PC is 5 times faster.

Many thanks again, mate.

Cheers.
