Get "The page cannot be displayed" only through Internet Explorer

System setup (not mine, but a friends) is XP Home with SP2 using IE 6.0.
After a recent reboot, any access through IE 6.0 is completely unsuccessful
with the above message. DNS does not seem to be the issue because even a
direct http:\\192.168.1.1 (the router) gives the same message. From the
command line and through Netscape you can access all sites fine and
interestingly enough, if you explore "My Computer" and type in any address,
ie. "www.msn.com", you can successfully navigate to sites with limited
functionality.

Internet settings shows that it is not using a proxy server and all plugins
were disabled. My last resort is to completely uninstall IE 6.0, and
reinstalling but that would also require an uninstall of SP2. Any simple way
to debug what the addresses are getting resolved to or a possible fix?

Thanks!

Thanks Silj for the reply, but unfortunately I still have the same symptoms.
I retried all the fixes and I should have noted that I disabled all firewalls
and already attempted the winsock stack fix prior to posting. I really
believe that a strong clue is that Netscape AND using My Computer's explorer
can successfully navigate to external web pages correctly must indicate that
it is a IE Explorer 6 registry setting or something is hijacking it and again
note that proxy server settings are disabled and automatically detect
settings is disabled.

Any other thing to look for or possible ways to track this down?

Thanks!

Router issue, Cary? Check with the vendor, D-Link, Linksys...
Some routers use a 'web-based' interface for set-up, that's one avenue you
should look at.

Run a "Hijackware" check!

Download and run Lavasoft's Ad-aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy.
Ad-aware here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com
SpyBot here: http://www.safer-networking.org

Install (both) applications since one catches what the other doesn't.
Update both *immediately* upon installation as they are not updated,
"out of the box".
Delete whatever Ad-aware finds in the scan results, you will be prompted.
Remove all the items found in the SpyBot scan results marked "red", the remainder
are minor items that can be ignored until you are more familiar with the program.

Any luck fixing this ? I have a very similar problem...
(system: IE6, XP home sp2, Norton Antivirus 2005)
Affected : Internet explorer, windows automatic update
Unaffected : Outlook mail, Firefox browser

Ruling out a DNS issue because browsing works fine with
a different browser, can see rest of LAN etc

Ruling out a router issue because other PCs on the LAN
can use Internet Explorer to browse the net without problems.

Unlikely to be a winsock issue if Outlook can still get
mail ?

Ran Spybot search & destroy, deleted cookies and delted internet explorer
history. Nothing shown in anti-virus scan.

Any other ideas ?

Thanks
Ian

Follow up :
Problem fixed (nearly)

- SpyBot found 2 bits of spyware
- AdAware kept crashing with a DCOM RPC error
- Microsoft Beta Anti-spyware found 19 different
spyware/trojans including 2 trojans.
Not sure it managed to completely remove them all
though - but at least it alerts
you when something attempts to hijack the URL.
Internet Explorer now working again.

Curious why Norton Antivirus didn't pick up the trojans though (haxdoor.k)
.....
