Get rid of unwanted program launches

When I start XP, a bunch of programs (e.g. QuickTime)
automatically launch themselves. I don't want to delete
the programs, since I use them occasionally, but how do I
prevent them from starting up every time? They're not in
the Start>Programs>Startup directory.

Check the program itself for the option to disable loading at Startup. If
you can't find it there, click Start, Run and enter MSCONFIG Go to the
startup tab. You can disable startup items there.
