get from selected startup back to normal ?

Tried to install scanner, turned out to be win95 software and problens
since then.

After removing as much as possible of the scanner files I had a system
that:

1) hung for 2 - 3 min on logging on to account(4 accounts on welcome
screen) while loading system tray.

2) hung for 3- 4 mins whenever I opened mycomputer folder, searching
for icons.

I have used msconfig services tab to narrow down problems to "task
scheduler" & "windows image acquisition"(WIA).

I have disabled these 2 items which as stopped the system hanging in
both situations listed above & system seems to run just great, playing
games etc.

But when I switch on the machine for the first time I get black screen
message that windows was not shut down correctly & giving startup
options, I start normal & everything runs ok but in msconfig I am
running a selective startup with the 2 services mentioned above
disabled & Use modified boot.ini on the general tab.

Can anyone help me get the system back to normal please ?

I have searched web for info but unfortunately this is an OEM windows
XP home edition & many fixes don't seem to include OEM disks (

Miko63,

You need to disable the services from 'Start > Programs > Administrative
Tools > Services', not from 'msconfig > Services tab'.
Disabling services from msconfig changes the 'Normal Startup' to 'Selective
Startup' and if you change it back to 'Normal Startup' then the services are
re-enabled.

Follow these steps:
* Disable the two services using the above method
* open msconfig, select 'Normal Startup - load all device drivers &
services'
* Click OK > Click 'Restart'

Note:
If you receive the 'black screen message' you referred to, repeat the steps,
but instead of clicking 'Restart', click 'Exit without restart', then log
off > log on > restart'

Thanks drew for the reply,

Done what you said, yes it removed the 2 items from the list in
msconfig so I could then do a normal start but unfortunately there is
obviously a problem with the boot.ini or some record of boot.ini

when I restart I get the black screen & message "windows did not start
successfully etc"

gives me options, when I start normal it alters msconfig to selective
start because it is still using the modified boot.ini ?
