"Get external data" fails

We use ODBC/Microsoft Query a lot to pull data from a database into Excel
2000. One of our PCs has suddenly stopped responding when we try to get
external data. This is a PC that has been set up to do this function for
years. When files containing a query are opened, the user cannot refresh the
query. It simply stops responding. When a blank document is opened and the
user tries to "get external data", Excel just stops responding.

Any suggestions?

This is only a guess, but I would suggest ensuring that:

- The computer is connected to the LAN or mainframe source
- That the computer is logged-on to the source
- That the original file locations were not moved or renamed (check
directories also)
- That the password (if any) remembered by Excel is correct

You could have a bad network card. An alternative would be to start-over
with the GET EXTERNAL DATA routine. Sometimes things have a way of
corrupting themselves. Good luck. I hope I helped.
