Genuine Windows Validation failed to recognize legal copy of Windows

Hi All,
Recenly I've purchased new HP notebook with preinstalled Windows XP Pro
SP2.
When today I tried to update my copy of Windows using Microsoft update
service the Genuine Windows Validation program told me I'm using an
illegal version of MS Windows !!!
I've tried to reactivate my copy of OS by changing registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents
and running
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
But when I entered the OEM license number (as per HP OEM sticker) and
attempted
to activate, I was politely informed that the key number was mistyped
(message number 45128) and invalid, yet the activation works when I'm
not change serial key !
The guys from HP customer support say it is Microsoft's problem.
Could somebody help me with that issue?

Thanks in advance,
Leonid Kvetnyi

Well it might be a problem at MS, but your support is done through HP. So
that makes it their problem because they are the ones who can get MS to fix
it. If HP is aware there is a problem, I would assume you are not the only
HP customer with this issue and keep after them.

Sorry its not an answer, but hopefully they will come up with a fix soon.

Q:
What should I do if I have a problem with the Windows validation
process?

A:
If you cannot resolve your problem using this FAQ, please use the
Contact Us link at the bottom of Microsoft Download Center pages to request
additional assistance. For English users, you may also access the WGA
newsgroup for additional discussion and user-to-user support.

Q:
What if my copy of Windows fails the validation process or I believe I
have received pirated software?

A:
In either case, Microsoft recommends the following steps: First, turn
on Automatic Updates to make sure your system is being protected while you
are resolving the problem. Second, visit Microsoft how to tell website to
learn how to recognize genuine Windows software. Third, see your reseller
and ask for genuine Windows software, using the report provided during the
validation session for support. The report explains why your system was
unable to validate, and provides instructions for further follow-up.

I already solved this problem by reinstalling Windows with "repair"
option.
Thanks you all.

Mike,

We have 80 Tablet PCs to reimage in the next week and we are receiving this
error message on each one that we have tried so far. Calling MS for assitance
is one thing when you have one machine, but for 80 we would do nothing else
but spend time on the phone waiting. Is there an alternative? Is there a way
to make this work as it should? We have 80 legitimate copies of XP Pro and
all the serial numbers that originally came with the machines, but it will
still not work for us.

We are using Symantec Ghost to make the images. This worked at this time
last year with these same machines, so I can only assume that the problem
came up because of changes with MS Product Activation.

Actually, I don't think Ghost is the problem, Chuck. It does its part
flawlessly and this version has not been problematic in the past. It seems
that something has changed is the last year with product activation.

That's putting it mildly!

My advice to anyone running business critical systems is to make sure
those systems do not rely on Activation in any way, shape or form, and
are not locked to specific hardware.

If the ops system was installed by HP, HP IS responsable for support. OEMs
accepted all support responsibility as a condition of the OEM license.
In the past, when confronted by similar situations, and was very nice to the
microsoft support people, I've usually been able to get microsoft to provide
free help.
Having said that, there is a strong possibility that something occurred
after sale that is the real reason for the problem. If the software was a
recwnr version of Office, for example, microsoft may be able to help.
Unfortunately, HP is not responsible for the effects of software, etc. added
after purchase.

The "Genuine Windows Validation program" is not completely bug free.

The recent troubles at HP seem to have seriously degraded the quality of
customr support. For a very long time, HP provided some of the best support
around. Unfortunately, it started to go down hill almost immediately after
the "split up" of HP.

Usually, there is some method of recovering the system provided by the OEM.
One of the problems I've run into is that the validation sticker and
information may not agree with what was actually loaded by the OEM.
HP used to place the diagnostic software and the recovery files in a
separate hard drive partition, and also supply recovery CD's. I don't know
if this is true for your laptop.

Most HP and other laptops sold have either the XP media center edition or XP
home installed by HP. If the dealer installed something else, the copy may
very well be "illegal"
