A friend of mine was having some problems and I checked out their system and
found a hot copy of XP Pro. I don't think that they need pro. Home is
adaquate for them. I have 3 questions aboput this.
1. I have heard that you cannot downgrade XP Pro to XP Home. Can somebody
confirm this for me?
2. If I were to back up Documents and Settings\{username} would I back up
anything that would not be comaptible with XP Home?
3. If there are non-compatible fileshow do I determine what to back up and
what di discard.
Thanks

1) you cannot downgrade
2) probably serves little purpose
2) Backup data files
But then whats up with xp pro? they dont have to use all its options
Do you actually know what your doing?

Hi DL, Yes I know what I am doing. The user is a home user and doesn't
require Pro. Considering that OE, Address Book, Favorites, Custom Dic and My
Doc's are all in different sub directories I thought a {username} backup
could be an easy way to backup. Simply take all fies except *.dat and
*.dat.log.

Is there anything that would not be compatible with Home?

What exactly was the message from Genuine Advantage (WGA) ?

I'd suggest looking at the XP Files & Settings Transfer wizard & offloading to portable media.
Thereafter, once a new XP is ready, you can proceeed again with FAST & transfer the data.

See this excellent reference on File & Settings Transfer by Gary Woodruff [MS-MVP]
