Generic Host for Win32 Services

I had some problems with my harddrive a couple of months
ago, and since then, I am unable to download any security
or other updates for WindowsXP (Home), even directly from
the Microsoft download page. I get the following error
messages:

"Generic Host for Win32 Services has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." (I'm sorry too!)

"The software you are installing has not passed the
Windows Logo testing to verify its compatability with
Windows XP. The software will not be installed. Contact
your system administrator."

Very frustrating since its a Windows XP update! Thoughts?

I've had this Generic Host for Win32 Services problem
since April. I believe it started when I installed SP
1. Since then, I've had no luck downloading any of XP's
updates. I've been told to disable XP's firewall, to
disable antivirus software. I've done that with no
luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm
considering uninstalling and then reinstalling XP but
that makes me nervous.
