general protection fault

Jen

I have a program called Kid Pix, for my daughter. I had
it running fine for a couple of weeks, but then she
realised we weren't able to get the backgrounds for some
reason. So I uninstalled it, then tried to reinstall
it. But now I get a message saying: "Application error.
QTinstal caused a general protection fault in module QT
16INST.exe at 0002:5DA9" and it won't load.

Somebody please help!
She's so upset.

Hi Jen,

A few ideas come to mind which you can try in this order..

1. Disable all other programs during installation especially Antivirus;
2. Uninstall the program using the steps posted below;
3. Use Compatibility mode to install and play that game as posted below.

==================================================
Here's how to properly install or reinstall a game (and/or patch):

1. Backup any saved games and/or mods to a safe location.

2. Uninstall the game using Control Panel / Add-Remove programs.
* Manually delete the game folder or saved games if necessary.

3. Clear any references to the game leftover in your registry using:
http://www.pcmedixwebs.com/regclean.htm

4. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

5. After a reboot close & exit your Antivirus and any other programs
using this method: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331796

6. Install the game again from your original CD, do not use a backup.

7. Don't reuse the saved games/mods until you properly test the game.

====================================================

To install a program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode, hold
down SHIFT as you insert the game CD, use My Computer to browse
to the setup program, and then skip down to step 1 in the list below:

To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).

1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:
a.. Windows 95
b.. Windows 98
c.. Windows NT 4
d.. Windows 2000
5.. Under Display settings, check mark the mode that you think that is best:
a.. Run in 256 colors.
b.. Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
c.. Disable visual themes.

Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.
