gateway won't connect to internet?

I have a 6 computer network. all but the gateway is
working fine. file and printer sharing works and I can
ping all computers on the network, even the router.

The gateway will not connect to the internet or a third
party system routed through the gateway. again I can ping
and share files but not connect to the internet or the
third party system.

All the tcp/ip prot are correct and it was up and running
until two days ago.

the system is running xp as are all but two of the others
(win 98)
I am at a dead end, any thoughts?

Why do you have a gateway AND a router? Usually the router is the gateway.
