gaming rig under $600?

wooducoodu

ok, i have some family members who want me to build them a "gaming rig" but
scoffed when i said $600 minimum for the tower. any suggestions for a system
under $600 that include case, psu, mb, cpu, ram, video, hdd, cd? i figure
i'll have accept onboard sound but i'd prefer to stick with a P4C rather
than AMD, other than that i'm open to suggestions. video card is what i'm
least certain of. they mentioned ut2004 and counterstrike.

This goes over your budget but you could save about $50 by dropping down
to a 2.26Ghz CPU and save another $25+ by dropping back to a standard
9600; but then you're marginal for playing UT2004. You might find some
stuff used (vid card, cd-rom, memory) and save a few more $$. $600 is
tight for a gaming rig.

[note: I tossed this together very quickly and didn't check
compatability on everything]

IMO you will save some $$ going the AMD route. Here's one suggestion...

Antec case $112
includes 430W PSU and fans
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-115&depa=1

Mainboard $61
with onboard LAN and audio
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-128-243&depa=1

Athlon XP 2500+ $81
unlocked out of the box, one of the most 'overclockable' CPUs
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-379&depa=1

512MB PC2700 RAM $86
could go with 256x2 *shrug* won't change price much
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-202&depa=1

nVidia 5700 $127
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-125-126&depa=1

WD 120GB IDE drive $82
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-107&depa=1

CD-RW/DVD combo drive $42
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-818&depa=1

That's $591, plus shipping (many of those items are free shipping).
This assumes you already have an OS, keyboard, mouse, and a monitor.
You could save a few bucks with a cheaper case, like this one:

Enermax case w/ 350W PSU $53
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-124-085&depa=1

That would free up $60 for a fair 6-channel sound card.

OK, that was TOUGH. But check out the following from newegg. Note the
nvidia 5900XT and Creative brand sound card and P4 2.53 (roughly the same as

Tomshardware does that. If you are stuck on the 865 chipset and 2.4C and
dual channel optimized memory, you aren't going to get this rig under $600
by changing graphic cards. You can't skimp on the video card if you want a
gaming rig. Get a cheaper mainboard and cheaper processor, and forget about
the dual channel optimized RAM. Either that, or up your budget a bit. Good
luck, -Dave

yeah i think part of it is i just hate the idea of centering a system around
a video card since they have by far the shortest usefull lifespan of
anything else in there. maybe i'll just tell them to go buy a dell and leave
me alone. ;) let them see how well ut2004 runs on a sub $600 dell.

But the good news is that they can upgrade the video card in 6 months
and all the other components will still not need upgrading.

Depends on your definition of "runs". I run UT2004 on my Mac powerbook,
with a Go5200 video card, 1.33 GHz G4, and 512MB PC2700 RAM. And it
runs pretty damn smooth. Of course, for some, they are not happy unless
they get x FPS or can use AA or whatever.

The bad part of getting a low-end Dell is they usually include a PSU
that barely covers the requirements of all the included hardware, and if
you DO upgrade the video card in 6-12 months, you may not be able to
power it.

ok, i have some family members who want me to build them a "gaming
rig" but scoffed when i said $600 minimum for the tower. any
suggestions for a system under $600 that include case, psu, mb, cpu,
ram, video, hdd, cd? i figure i'll have accept onboard sound but i'd
prefer to stick with a P4C rather than AMD, other than that i'm open
to suggestions. video card is what i'm least certain of. they
mentioned ut2004 and counterstrike.

For $171 one can get an Athlon 64 3000+ retail box. That would be
a much better choice than a P4 2.8 ghz 533 for gaming. It even beats
a P4 3.2 ghz in many benchmarks.

One can find a motherboard for it for around $80 or so.
