Games will not run after Unreal II

I bought Unreal 2, installed it and despite long machine
pauses interspersed with brief game playing I finished it
but was so apauled by the problems that I had with it
that I then uninstalled it.

The problem is that my other games which played fine
before hand are now having problems. Unreal Tournament
2003 pauses in the same way Unreal 2 did and the original
UT dies after a couple of minutes requiring a machine
restart.

At the same time that I installed Unreal 2 I also updated
to Direct X 9a and updated my soundcard (Audigy) and
Graphics (GeForce3 Ti500) drivers to the latest certified
ones. Dxdiag finds nothing amis and I'm now out of ideas.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so how do I fix
it?

One thing to check would be the possible virus of spyware bogging down
the computer performance in the background, make a virus check and use
ad-aware to clean the system if needed: http://www.lavasoft.com/

Hi Katy

Thanks for the help. I tried Ad-aware and it did find
some stuff. It hasn't solved the problem but I feel a lot
better now the things it found have been removed.

Hi Doc

True enough it probably is something I installed (driver
or whatever) rather than the game but I thought that the
Unreal 2 information may have been relevent. After all if
the game would actually run through it's introductory
movie without crashing my system (requiring a restart) I
would probably not have had to do all the updates (as
suggested by the docs with the game) anyway.
