I double-click (or hit Enter) on the Game Controllers applet in Control
Panel and basically nothing happens. The first time I do it I hear a
MessageBeep (either exclamation or critical, not sure which) as if a dialog
box opened, but there is no dialog box (and no, it's not hidden behind a
window or anything). Any other time I just get an "app starting" cursor for
a second or two and then it goes back to normal. If I open Task Manager and
go to the Processes tab I can see RUNDLL32 appear briefly when I try to run
the applet and then vanish.
Yes, I'm running a virus scanner. It hasn't detected anything.
The applet has definitely worked in the past.
I have recently downloaded a freeware program called JoyToKey which can map
joystick input to keyboard input. It is most likely the culprit, because it
was only after running it for the first time that I noticed the applet
wouldn't open. That could, however, be a coincidence.
Anyone ever seen this behavior? Any suggestions? I fear I'm looking at a
reinstall.
