Gah! $200 just to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro??

Just want to make sure I got that straight.

We've got a computer we ordered a couple of years back, and (purely my
fault) we ordered it with XP Home instead of XP Pro (no difference in the
price from Gateway, as I recall.)

We've started using it more on the network recently and run into some file
saving problems, so I upgraded it with a XP Pro CD we already had in the
office, but naturally the licence key isn't taking, so it's going to run out
in a few weeks. Is my only option to plunk down $200 for a whole new
packaged upgrade CD?

Well, you could reformat your drive and reinstall
Windows XP Home Edition. What other option
are you looking for?

If you already have a retail copy of Windows XP, you can obtain
additional licenses for another computer or laptop by visiting the
following Microsoft Web site:

Your post begs the question...why are you upgrading? Are you needing Pro to
join a domain?
You will gain nothing in performance by upgrading to Pro. Pro adds a host
of security not found in Home, but performance is the same on both.

To continue with Bobby's idea... Err... What sort of problems are you having
with file saving? I don't know of a single thing that differentiates XP Pro
from XP Home (other than the number of connections) that might bring up that
sort of issue.

Trouble saving files? What does that mean?

If you are joining a domain, wanting to use Remote Desktop features or want
to use EFS to secure your files.. XP Pro is the way to go and yes - you
would need to purchase a new version (upgrade version at least - retail..)
of Windows XP Professional to do this.

If you are doing none of those things - then it is unlikely you need Windows
XP Pro's advanced feature set. A cursory glance (all that we were given)
says your problem lies in lack of configuration knowledge or some other
issues that need to be resolved.

Wait! I'll send you my copy absolutely free.

Of course you will have to pay $200. shipping and handling.

Do you really expect someone to give you Windows XP Professional?

The problems we are having involved files saved on our server. From this
particular station, we'll open an AutoCAD file, no problem -- but sometimes
when we go to save it, we'll get a message that the file's in use by another
user (which it isn't) and can't be saved. As far as I can tell, it happens
completely at random.

Also, tacking on a reply to another post:
*shrug* Gateway, where we bought the offending machine, offers both systems
on their computers for exactly the same price. I was accordingly shocked at
cost to upgrade from one to the other after the fact. Do you really expect
someone to cheerfully shell out two hundred bucks for what several posters
have now described as zero difference in performance?
