I started with a clean install of Vista on this new laptop with
everything turned OFF, and one by one tried things. So far, so
good, and I really like it (am I alone?).

But I can't figure out how to turn on the Gadgets panel with
keystrokes...

Windows key, start typing "sidebar", when "Windows Sidebar" is highlighted
at the top of the list hit the Enter key.

If the Windows Sidebar (Gadgets Panel) is installed and available for use by
the OS, then you will have a control panel icon in your 'Control Panel' that
will give you the option to run at Startup.
Good luck.

Control Panel > double click "Windows Sidebar Properties"
Check: "Start Sidebar when Windows Starts."
Click OK

THANK YOU.

I thought there was a quick keystroke combination that would do
it. Something like Windows+spacebar...?

If there isn't such a thing, I definitely do not want to burden
startup with the sidebar, but would want a delayed start. I use
True Launch, which permits a fast "naked" startup and then
staged selective startup of other things. If there's an icon or
shortcut somewhere that will turn ON the sidebar I can stage it.

The key word here is "keystrokes", so going through the control panel to
find it is too complicated, at least to get started.

After checking the help files (F1, keyboard shortcuts)

"Windows logo key +SPACEBAR" will get to it, but not launch it.

It does work! I just didn't have the sidebar properly launched
in the first place. Once that's done, ON/OFF is:

W + spacebar = ON
Rightclick + close = OFF (is there a keystroke combo?)

THANKS!!

Create a shortcut on the Desktop and type "%ProgramFiles%\Windows
Sidebar\sidebar.exe" (Including the quotes).

In the shortcut properties, define a Shortcut Key. Place the shortcut in a
handy location.

That worked perfectly. This computer has True Launch with icons
for a couple of batch files - each includes some array of
"extras" selectable after the basic boot if they're required. I
did that to speed up initial startup...

I've added your prescribed sidebar shortcut to the most-used
batch, and it works perfectly. THANKS!

However, startup (Vista Home Premium plus Avast) is still almost
two minutes. I've trimmed unused Services, so I guess that's as
good as it will get until the first SP shows up.

Glad this helped.

You might want to check the options for Avast, it may be performing a
complete scan each time you start or restart the computer. In most cases,
this is a completely useless option.
