My canon N1240U refused to install. Then I happened to install Photo
Elements. Then the scanner installed, except it can only be accessed from
Photo Elements. The scanner does not appear in Programs.

It is not suppose to show in Programs. Unless you install some scanner
utility that then uses a TWAIN interface.

It is a TWAIN interface, therefore is in the Acquire in Photoshop Elements.
What installed was the TWAIN driver.

This is a reinstall after a hard drive wipe and reinstall XP. The first
install, which I thought was Twain, was made before PhotoShop
Elements(PE)was installed and the scanner was accessed from Programs. There
is also a WIA disc, which I don't remember using the first time. Maybe I
did. It did not work on attemped reinstall. I have not tried it since PE was
installed this time. Can I do anything to be able to access the Scanner
without going through PE?

I can't get that page to display. In the canon site, I can't even get the
list of drivers page to display. Tried several times. Any further hints, or
just keep trying?

The other link works fine in Outlook Express 6. All I do is click the link.
Sometimes a copy and paste in the browser address bar is necessary.

Try this one.
http://www.usa.canon.com/html/canonindex.html

Hover the mouse cursor on Support in the Red menu bar. (near the top of the
page)
Choose Consumer. On the next page in the dropdowns:
Category is Scanners.
Product Type is CanoScan Series.
Model is CanoScan N1240U.

All of that will take you to:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=235&modelid=6621

The page is Support CanoScan N1240U.
The Downloads is a little scroll down on the page.

This is weird, at least to me.
After I downloaded the Twain driver for XP that you told me about, the
scanner was still only accessible in Photoshop Elements as before. But, when
I next did an installation from the original CD, there was the Scangear
Toolbox in Programs that I had been trying to get to for days. Thanks, I
think.
