Functions and programs not working in Windows Vista RC1

Microsoft might want to know the following aren't working on one RC1
installation:

Windows Fax
MS Outlook
Windows Mobile Center (can't synchronize a Dell Axim v51)
MS Office 2007 Beta (technical refresh is pending, I understand, though not
yet available)
Internet Explorer 7 (freezes after visiting about four web pages)
Desktop shortcuts to most programs (I am logged on as an administrator)
Start menu shortcuts to most programs (the shortcut within the group folder
for the program do work)
Link to "Activate Windows"
Hewlett Packard 2840
Cannot uncheck "require users to log on with password on logon screen" and
thus bypass logon screen for a single-user machine.

Other than that, Vista has a very nice visual appeal.

Windows Fax - Haven't tried, really don't want to. ;)

MS Outlook - Versions 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007 work just fine here, even my
..PST folders work just fine after importing.

Windows Mobile Center (can't synchronize a Dell Axim v51) - If its running
version 2003 to 2003 SE, its not compatible and WMDC is not working in this
build, hopefully an interim release or RTM.

MS Office 2007 Beta (technical refresh is pending, I understand, though not
yet available)
Works just fine here, typing up my RC1 review right now in Word 2007 BETA
2.

Internet Explorer 7 (freezes after visiting about four web pages)
Which webpages are these? Its possible they require certain Active X
controls or Java extensions to run properly which are disabled by default.
If you are surfing with IE 7 64-Bit, that might also be the reason, try in
IE 7 32-Bit and see if they work.

Desktop shortcuts to most programs (I am logged on as an administrator)
Start menu shortcuts to most programs (the shortcut within the group folder
for the program do work)
Which desktop shortcuts are these? Mine are working fine so far.

Link to "Activate Windows"
Ok, now I am sorta beginning to think you have a bad install of Vista or
just a bad profile, try creating another account and activate again or
reinstall Vista (clean install) if you did an upgrade.

Hewlett Packard 2840
You need to check HP for drivers or send in a Driver request using the
feedback link on your desktop.

Cannot uncheck "require users to log on with password on logon screen" and
thus bypass logon screen for a single-user machine.

Care to expand upon how they don't work? Error messages?

I can say IE 7 works fine for me.

I looked that up in the help. Can't recall what I searched on, but
that's by design.

Dear Andre,

Thanks for your thoughtful suggestions; I'll try some of them.

Dear Evan,

Thanks for your suggestions. It does indeed seem Microsoft's design to not
provide the capability of turning on a Windows Vista machine and having it go
directly to your desktop, bypassing a user logon screen.

While we'd like to bend it to our will, perhaps we should be grateful that
Microsoft lets us use their software at all, albeit with limitations they
feel appropriate. The control userpasswords2 worked in Windows Vista Beta 2,
but no longer works in Windows Vista Release Candidate 1.

My OS has a null response to double clicking on desktop shortcuts to major
programs like MS Word 2003, or Adobe Acrobat 7.

Regards!

Hardly surprising considering all the work they put in to make Visa a
secure OS, to then let the users disable all the security-features would
be dumb to say the least. XP was no less secure than most OSes, but
users just didn't use the security features.

Dear Erik,

Have you found a workaround for the cannot-bypass-logon-screen limitation in
RC1?

Thanks very much!

No, but than I don't need it, and I suspect that there is none.
