Hey all:
Here's what's been happening in John H's world of freeware.
1: It's official -Copernic Desktop Search http://www.copernic.com/ may
now be officially credited with saving me two hours of time and a whole
lot of typing. I was getting hammered with support calls. One manager
called up with questions about how to perform an FTP file transfer. I
really didn't have the time to sit on the phone with her and take her
through it step by agonzing step. I remembered typing up some
instructions for FTP to this site for someone else months ago, but
couldn't remember what I called the doc it or where it was (file
system? email?). I couldn't use F3 search because it would take too
long and I'd need to search three disks. I input "FTP" and the
staffer's name into Copernic and had the instructions in less than ten
seconds. "File," Send to." She has two pages of written instructions
step by step. And I have her out of my hair.
2: The freeware site at www.jhoodsoft.org has been revamped and
expanded. It now has Google search also. The old "pretty" site was
great, but all of those graphics were murder when using a dial-up
connection. I discovered this when attempting to download from it while
repairing relatives computers over Christmas. Page loads on dial -up
are now 7-10 seconds. My wife also says it looks less "Geeky" and more
like something an average person would use. Whatever.
I'm using a stripped down version of WxWikiServer
http://www.wikiserver.org/download.html to do the page editing , then I
dump the whole site to HTML and upload the contents of the dump folder.
WxWikiServer is really sweet because there is no install and the program
is very small. The entire site is less than 2 meg zipped, so it fits on
a thumb drive with room to spare.
3: My coworkers and I have discovered that relaxing with a little
first-person-shooter action is a fun way to start a lunch hour. We've
been playing Cube. http://cube.sourceforge.net/ Cross -platform, no
install. Plays like Quake2.
4: Since I'm in and out of other people's Outlook mailboxes so much,
(I'm an email admin) I often don't have my Outlook open for calendar
and addresses. I also need to sync my palm with my Outlook at work with
my wife's calendar.
I was messing around with Borg Calendar a while back, but didn't think
too much of it. Boy has that changed. Export and import to most
common formats. resides in the system tray. They are working on
conduits for Palm OS devices. Open source. Boy is this going to make my
life easier. http://borg-calendar.sourceforge.net/
5: I am also impressed with the new version of EasyOffice. If you are
willing to put up with the nag screen this is really nice, especially
for people who need business capabilities without a lot of struggle.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
