Fun with Freeware (Long)

John Hood

Hey all:

Here's what's been happening in John H's world of freeware.

1: It's official -Copernic Desktop Search http://www.copernic.com/ may
now be officially credited with saving me two hours of time and a whole
lot of typing. I was getting hammered with support calls. One manager
called up with questions about how to perform an FTP file transfer. I
really didn't have the time to sit on the phone with her and take her
through it step by agonzing step. I remembered typing up some
instructions for FTP to this site for someone else months ago, but
couldn't remember what I called the doc it or where it was (file
system? email?). I couldn't use F3 search because it would take too
long and I'd need to search three disks. I input "FTP" and the
staffer's name into Copernic and had the instructions in less than ten
seconds. "File," Send to." She has two pages of written instructions
step by step. And I have her out of my hair.

2: The freeware site at www.jhoodsoft.org has been revamped and
expanded. It now has Google search also. The old "pretty" site was
great, but all of those graphics were murder when using a dial-up
connection. I discovered this when attempting to download from it while
repairing relatives computers over Christmas. Page loads on dial -up
are now 7-10 seconds. My wife also says it looks less "Geeky" and more
like something an average person would use. Whatever.

I'm using a stripped down version of WxWikiServer
http://www.wikiserver.org/download.html to do the page editing , then I
dump the whole site to HTML and upload the contents of the dump folder.
WxWikiServer is really sweet because there is no install and the program
is very small. The entire site is less than 2 meg zipped, so it fits on
a thumb drive with room to spare.

3: My coworkers and I have discovered that relaxing with a little
first-person-shooter action is a fun way to start a lunch hour. We've
been playing Cube. http://cube.sourceforge.net/ Cross -platform, no
install. Plays like Quake2.

4: Since I'm in and out of other people's Outlook mailboxes so much,
(I'm an email admin) I often don't have my Outlook open for calendar
and addresses. I also need to sync my palm with my Outlook at work with
my wife's calendar.
I was messing around with Borg Calendar a while back, but didn't think
too much of it. Boy has that changed. Export and import to most
common formats. resides in the system tray. They are working on
conduits for Palm OS devices. Open source. Boy is this going to make my
life easier. http://borg-calendar.sourceforge.net/

5: I am also impressed with the new version of EasyOffice. If you are
willing to put up with the nag screen this is really nice, especially
for people who need business capabilities without a lot of struggle.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Hey, it looks great -- thanks!

Just one thing -- in the anti-virus section, you have exactly the same
description of the product under AVG and ANTIVIR. I think it's cut and
paste gone wild! <grin>

Well done!
Only one glitch, at least on my side with Firefox: the links menu on the
left is cut off after the "Tools & Utils" section. I don't see the "Misc"
section, which exists in your HTML code.

Yep, mine's cut off too with Firefox 1.0

Hmm... not sure what exactly I did as I can't replicate it, but I just
had your menu scroll down to what is obviously the bottom. I think I
scrolled down while over the right hand side of the page but not sure as
I saw something out of the corner of my eye and a second or two later
noticed the menu had moved.

re: Crypt Edit

I suggest you add another link. IIRC the conversions plugin is no longer
available on the author's web site. REMbranded's site has it - and
several other Crypt Edit downloads that aren't on the author's site. see:

re spreadsheets - ISTM a note in that entry mentioning that OO.org has a
spreadsheet would be helpful. IMO it's would be easy to miss that if
you're looking specifically for a spreadsheet. . .

The site looks great, loads fast. Tell your wife thanks for me. :)

I remember now. I had to get the 12/23/03 version. Still plays well.

Yep so is mine. Weird. Loading the original wikserver page does the
same. But loading the wiki with the default sidebar does not. I may
have butchered the sidebar somehow during reformating the default
wikiserver setup for the freeware site. I know very little about
editing CSS style sheets and was doing it trial and error. I'll have to
take this up with my HTML guru.

Ok I think I got this fixed. Check now. Does the full sidebar menu load
for Firefox users?

With the browser that I am using, Opera it is also cut off, but if I
reduce the font size on the page I can then see the Misc.

When I scroll down the page the menu slides up the page and
disappears, then appears again

Looks good from here, with the 2004-11-07 Gecko engine of Firefox 1.0...

Peggy -

There are some known issues with Opera and the Wikiserver I am using.
The software author is working on fixes (not just work-around hacks)
for the next release. Until then, I'm afraid this is the best I can do
for Opera users.

I'll update the server when it comes out and have ACF Opera users test,

John H.
