Full screen game in windowed mode

I read on several websites, including about.com, that
there is a way to play a full screen game in windowed
mode. They said that you right click on the shortcut, go
to properties, and in the target field, you add "-window"
to the end. I tried this, and it doesn't work. It doesnt
work with DOS either. Is there any way for it to work?

If the game supports it, pressing ALT + <ENTER> will
bring it from full screen to windowed or the other way
around on games running in a DOS box.
