Fujitsu Amilo A1630 laptop problem

This is really a hardware problem, so if it's the wrong ng could someone
point me in the right direction, I could not see any more suitable ng.
The problem is to do with the screen and possibly the AC adapter. Some time
ago one of the four pins on the power supply plug snapped off - probably my
ham-fisted way of hammering it home into the laptop (figuratively
speaking!). Recently i noticed that the screen was not as bright as another
laptop I had hanging around. Not sure how long it had been dimmer, if indeed
it was, as you don't tend to notice gradual changes. Removing the power
supply out (and therefore running on battery power) did not make the screen
dimmer, as I was sure it had when I originally bought it. Am I completely
mistaken and is the Amilo screen naturally dimmer than most? If not, would
this be due to a loss of one of the pins on the AC adapter, or just the
screen getting old (5 years old now) ? I did not notice a drop in brightness
when the pin broke some while ago, only recently. Finally, if necessary, can
the screen be replaced or is it just not worth it?
Sorry to ramble on, all and any help gratefully received
Rick

FWIW, the broken pin may tell the laptop that it in not on battery
power, and then the screen would set to a brighter intensity. Look in
the BIOS for that setting to determine screen brightness level for
Battery vs. AC power.

Check your manual on how to change screen brightness. Often you can hold
down a special key (on my Compaq it has the letters FN in a box), and then
hit one of the function keys multiple times to increase brightness in steps,
and another function key to decrease brightness. My F7 key has the symbols
*^ in a box for increasing brightness and the F8 has the symbols &v for
decreasing brightness. Many laptop manufacturers have downloadable PDF
manuals for new and old comptuers and some even have manuals for replacing
many hardware components.

Let's assume you mean "replace the AC adapter, not the power supply".

| There is a reason for all four of the pins. I would first replace the power
| supply. They can be found online for about $35. Screens can lose their
| brightness. There is a cold-cathode flourescent tube and an invertor that
| can go bad. For someone who is a little handy, these can be replaced fairly
| cheap. Directions can be found online. I would replace the power supply
| first. Buy from a company that will take a return.
