new laptop lcd, brightness function reversed

I just had the LCD screen on my Dell Inspiron 6000 replaced at my local shop
and noticed that it was much dimmer on boot-up than my wife's identical
Dell. I found pressing the FN and brightness keys are reversed - holding
the FN and brightness up key makes the display dimmer, and vice versa. Each
time I boot up, the screen returns to the dim setting and doesn't seem to
recall where it was last set at. The BIOS is current and the brightness is
set properly there. The screen initially comes on at the correct level,
then as the tray icons are loading, the screen dims. The shop has ordered a
new screen for me but is there some sort of setting I can look for in the
mean time? When I am in the BIOS looking at settings, the screen is
properly bright. It is only when Windows is running that it dims and the
function keys operate in reverse. Thanks.

More info: The laptop runs on XP Home with the latest video drivers
(identical to wife's).
