Fuji DPC R1 Card Reader and Scheduled tasks clash

S

Steve Paddock

Last Sunday, I bought a Fuji DPC-R1 USB Card Reader. Installation went
smoothly, there were no problems and the card worked as expected.

My PC is set up to run a scheduled daily back up through Windows XP backup
facility controlled through Scheduled Tasks. Since the installation of the
card reader, every time the daily back up runs it fails. The error given is
"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs
to close" OK'ing this prompt causes the PC to lock up. The only recovery
action possible is a re-boot.

I have proved that by physically removing the card reader and drivers, the
scheduled backup will run as normal. I have also proved that trying to run
any scheduled task with the card and drivers installed results in the same
error and lock up.

I have e-mailed Fuji support to see if this is a known error and await their
response. Fuji website confirms that drivers on the cd are the latest ones
available.

Anyone any ideas please.

Thanks,

Steve

The card reader is assigned a drive letter and the drive
letter for your backup device may be in conflict.

Try assigning a drive letter for your backup device
manually.

Drive letters I & L were assigned on install. Backup device is J. I thought
it may have been a conflict, so changed the card reader to Y & Z. Still no
change. There are no conflicts shown in Device Manager or System Info. Still
baffled, but thanks for the suggestion.

Did you install the reader with the Fuji software or did you
use the XP default USB?

You might try uninstalling the device and software, then
using the USB XP drivers and see if that helps.

I have the same reader (should have bought the Lexar USB 2.0
reader, it is $20 less and reads at least 7 media forms). I
don't use anything except CD-RW for backup [will upgrade to
DVD-R soon].

Thanks for the suggestions. I believe I have now tried every option with
both the Fuji and XP drivers. (Device would not install with just the raw XP
drivers) Unfortunatley, the problem still exists. Looks like either an
exchange for the card reader, or a change in backup strategy. Unless of
course Fuji ever decide to repond and come up with a workable solution.

Thanks, again

Neither Fuji or Jessops Technical Support could fathom this out. Issue was
resolved by swapping the Card reader for mains adaptor for the Camera. Not
ideal, and certainly more time consuming, but at least it means scheduled
tasks are now working correctly again.
