It seems a new way to power MP3 players and other similar electronic devices has emerged. The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), revealed by Toshiba, produces a chemical reaction, which generates electricity. This technology would allow such devices to be used for a far longer period of time without any form of recharge. Toshiba have yet to announce whether consumers will be able to refill the fuel cells themselves.

This is one of many new power-generating innovations developed recently. Both IBM and Sanyo Electonic have been working on similar concepts to power laptops. UltraCell is also in the process of developing a battery with twice the energy density of a lithium battery.
