what is a well proven basic ftp program ? I have been using ws_ftp for a
long time and it works well, but now i have to re-install on a new hd and it
doesn't seem available free any longer

Pablo van der Meer's "FTP Wanderer" -- highly recommended. (As are his
other programs, like the FTP server.)
