FTP with IE7 is grrrrreat

Not so much the speed which is not that great but I just discovered some
amazing goodies that I didn't know were possible. I have a domain at
Yahoo GeoCities with lots pics and files and I used the built-in FTP
just to learn it. Since I upped to IE7 it was different so I went
Googling and found lots of discussions about how it didn't work. I
asked a few Q.s and got some complicated directions about how to use it
and spent this evening playing with it.

Well, it is really an amazing tool in that it opens a 2-way door from
your desktop to your domain file mgr. with one click.! Maybe everyone
knew this but me but I'm delighted with it. I don't know if it works
everywhere but it does at Yahoo GeoCities. Here's how..:

Right click the desktop > new > shortcut and name it ftp://username:
(e-mail address removed)

This brings up a 'can't open it' page and maybe a popup but, more
important, also puts a 'page' button on the tab bar. ignore the
'can't..' page, cancel the popup and click the 'page' button. Now click
the 'open with windows explorer' line.

Got another page and maybe another popup to cancel and go to the 'file'
at upper left and log in. This is the important log in popup. put in
username/password and click to save them.

May get an ftp page with a 'read me' on it. Ignore it and click the
'file' and log in again and save. You should be in your ftp folder to
drag and drop now. Lot of trouble, yes? But well worth it.

After you've gotten there once, go back and do it again to make sure
and then the fun starts.

Go back to your desktop and drag the shortcut down into the quick
launch bar and it will create a little icon down there over by the
clock. That l'il icon is marvelous. All you have to do now is single
click it to go to the FTP folder that you just set up.!! It has the
little arrows on it to open it wide. Click those little arrows and your
entire file mgr. will open up on your desktop just like the 'all
programs' tree on the start button.

Your FTP folder might open at the first sub directory. If so, the main
directory will be to the left on top of your PC directories. The marvel
of this is that you can look at and click on every file in your domain
file mgr.

I don't know if this worked with ie6 or not as I'm just learning but
from all the forums I browsed looking for info, no one seemed to know
anything about the ie7 FTP tricks. Even if you don't like or use the
built-in FTP this is really handy for checking your domain files even
if you don't ftp with it.

Remember that the the main thing is getting that 'page' button on the
tab bar with the 'open with windows explorer' line to click on. Then
going to 'file' and log in from there and save.

If anyone knows about this and can add to it I'd like to hear it. I'm
amazed at this.

Chas.

This still does not solve the problem of accessing web servers using FTP
under IE7 except perhaps for yahoo and msn. Reminds me of an expensive new
car a bought once that would start remotely either by pressing a button or
coming within 10 feet but then would not release the steering wheel lock
until it was turned off...
