FTP upload

Like most members I've been spoilt with the ease of uploading files using
FrontPage publish web. I however now need to upload some sub domain pages
via FTP. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this or if there is a useful
(plain English) tutorial anywhere. I've asked my ISP but they're about as
useful as a chocolate teapot. Fred

Just use a 3rd Party FTP application.

I would recommend using FP Import vice FTP. With the site open, create and
highlight a subweb folder in the left pane and click File | Import. Select
the files you want to add and once you click OK, they'll be uploaded to that
subweb folder.

BTW, I think a chocolate tea pot *would* be useful - I'd rather eat the pot
than drink what's in it

But, keep in mind, The import function only imports what is seen by a
browser, so shared borders, include files, navigation structure, themes,
asp pages, databases, etc. are not imported.

Open the site in IE, ftp://domain.com
Click File > Log in as... and log in.
Browse to the sub domain and then drag and drop the files from Windows Explorer into the
IE window.

I've imported html pages, xl worksheets, gifs, jpegs, asp, just about
anything I've wanted. What would being "seen by a browser" have to do with
importing an html page that has shared borders, themes or include pages
(which can be imported also)? You can import text.css, too. Any file on
your hard drive can be imported into your server's web folder, no? As long
as all interactive files are imported into the folder, doesn't that ensure
functionality?

FP has two different types of importing... Tom was referring to importing content from a web site
where FP will only import the HTML content that is viewable in a browser, which is different from
importing content from your desktop.

I'm curious. Why do the pages *HAVE* to be FTP'd? And don't you stand a risk of crashing
FP extensions on the server? And why does FTP crash FPE's anyhoo? And what's next week's
powerball numbers?

Another questionabout uploading,Please.

I am working on a web that will link to wmv streaming files that will be
changed monthly.

Would it be just as well to FTP them?

My plan is to replace the files with a new one of the same name so that no
page link name changes would be necessary. Are there flaws in that plan?

If your host supports subwebs place the audio files in the subweb and
you can use FTP without affecting the root web, even if you damage the
extensions in the subweb.

You can use FTP in a FrontPage web, but you MUST be very, very, very
careful. Do not (on pain of death of the extensions) FTP an entire
folder, only individual files. Do not even think about using FTP on a
folder, or the contents of a folder, with the a name starting with
_vti That will definitely corrupt the extensions. Note that every
folder containing web content also contains a folder named _vti_cnf
, which must NEVER be FTPed.
After using FTP, open the online web in FrontPage, and run
Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks
This should (but doesn't always) update the meta data stored in the
_vti* files with respect to the FTPed changes.
Using FTP in a FrontPage is not recommended, since it is very easy to
make a mistake and corrupt the extensions.
