Creating any type of presence on the web is more than clicking a few setup
files. The fundamentals of how to do the 'Display Name' Service (DNS) and the
web server (e.g. 'Apache' et al) to run the file server on, are really just
the beginning. If you haven't yet looked into those, wonderng about an FTP
server is getting a bit ahead of the game. XP Pro Edition includes the
"Internet Information Server" that could run FTP, but not Home. Anyone
worried about the difference in price is probably not going to handle the
expense and time required to maintain DNS.

It's possible, yes, but also keep in mind that you will not only need FTP
server software - this is the easy part - you must also contend with XP's
connection limits. It isn't intended to be a server OS and you will very
rapidly run into connection refusals.

You must consider firewall and security issues, plus know how to identify
and locate your system (hint: google DDNS).

Also, many ISPs forbid mounting any kind of server on residential,
non -commercial accounts. You need to check with yours before starting.
