FTP Server problems

Peter

I am trying to set up an FTP server on my XP Pro computer. I am routing
through a DLink di-624 router. I have set up the router to accept FTP
connections. I can access the FTP folders through the intranet, but cannot
through the internet. I have tried using a username and password with admin
privelages on the host computer with no luck.
Any suggestions of what is blocking my access?

You cannot set up a "FTP Server" on XP pro unless IIS is installed and a web
server created.

Hi

In a default installation port 20 and 21 have to be open through the Router
(and software firewalls) for connecting through the Internet.

There might be a problem of Passive vs. Active use of ftp (
http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html )

In addition, might be that every thing is OK, however, many ISPs block the
ftp ports on entry level accounts to prevent private a server hogging the
bandwidth

The tendency these days is to use passive FTP, and for this you need to
permit inbound connections to the control port (21) plus you need to define a
range of high-order ports for the data connections (this setting is in the
FTP program) and allow inbound connections on these via the firewall/router.

Take a look at Filezila Server: this allows secure FTP, which is a far
preferable system and greatly reduces te security risk. This works similarly
except the control port is 990.

Hi
Hmm... I think that the FileZilla Client can be secured, the FileZilla
Server is Not.

since you can access the ftp server internally, but not the internet.
Port forwarding needs to be set up on your router. google will tell you
how.
it starts with http://routerip e.g. http://192.168.0.1

When I try to install IIS, it asks for the 'infocomm.dll' file from SP1 cd.
The only problem is that I installed SP1 off of the microsoft site and
cannot find that file. I cannot install SP2 because it creates conflicts
with a certain graphics hardware that I am using. Do you know where I can
find the SP1 files?
