FTP Needed Files?

Mark J.

I have a website with thousands of files, formaly on a UNIX server, with
webs, sub-webs and just storage files (offsite.) The site is only on
one domain, and I use Network Solutions to web forward to the specific
file location for the sub-webs.

While I have always used Front Page (since 97 or 98,) I have never used
the 'web' portion of it, instead just creating a page then uploading it
via ftp.

I also update both data files and pages from a multitude of locations,
some with only dialup service.

I have Front page 98, 00 and 03'.

The problem is now I need to use the MS equivilant of formmail.pl, and I
cannot find a way to create the one page I need and upload it to the
site. I did figure out how to set the flag so it doesn't "publish"
every file on my hard drive, but the &*(*& thing looks at the server and
wants to delete every file on that isn't in the "web."

So, two questions:

1) Can you tell frontpage not to look at the server files, and just
upload what it needs?

2) Is there a "back way" to ftp that are needed for the formmail form to
work?

arrrgggghhhhh......

1. Check with your host to see if they support CGI scripts, if not then you will need to ask which
ASP mail component they have available or you can or have enable the FP extensions if available and
use the FP Form Handler.

2. If you want to use FP to publish, the remote site needs the FP extensions, then you will need to
get both the remote and the local copy in sync, and to do that open the live/remote site in FP and
publish to your local machine, then make your changes, then open the remote site in FP and delete
all content, except the images and _private folder, for these just delete the content, then do a
complete publish from your local to the remote, there after do not use any other application to
manage your content.

Thanks for your response, no the host does not support cgi scripts, they
do have fp extensions.

the website contains gigabytes of information with thousands of file,
and there is a requirement to be able to update outside of fp, and from
multible locations, so it is not practical to copy then entire site to
every location.

It seems very ill-logical to require this to simply update one page.

There is no way to simply upload one page (using fp publish or ftp) with
fp extensions enabled? (and without fp checking to see if you want to
delete every page on the site)

You would have to divide the content into subwebs/subsites would be the best solution. However with
FP2003 you can publish a single page.

If you want to use FP to manage your site, then you have to let FP manage the sit, and that includes
all content in the site, unless the site is broken into smaller sections (subwebs/subsites).

I have fp2003, but can't seem to find how to publish only one page
(well, I can mark all of the pages to not publish, then try to publish
one page, but fp wants to ask me if I want to delete my 3,600 files on
the site - one at a time.)

How do you publish one page (with fp extensions?)

I have never wanted fp to manager my site, that is my job, I want to fp
to help design the site, and leave the management to me.

Select the page, then right click and select publish.

In folder view, right-click the page and select publish.
Alternatively, in your publish pane select the file, then click right arrow.

Then do no create a local copy and do not publish
After the FP SE have been installed on your host server open the Online site in FP
File Open Site and enter http://www.yourdomain.com and log in
Run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
- create your form page online and just save it
Then use File Import to import other files

You can also create small local FP web w/ the form and publish it to the root as a subweb as
http://www.yourdomain.com/subwebname/ if you host supports subwebs
(if you want you can convert the subweb back to a folder in the online web)

Over time segregate your online web into subwebs so you can use some for FTP w/o the FP SE (as in your file storage) and other (your
root) for publishing
- If you FTP to the root after converting to a SE web, you will probably break any pages that require the FP SE (like your forms)
