FTP in WinXP

Mary

OK-below is a message I found when I did a Google search about this topic- I
did as he said to, but how can I, if I drag & drop files, see them on the
Internet as a WebPage (an HTML file)? I need some help with this. I have
tried numerous FTP programs, but just can't get them on my website. After I
make a webpage, save it as a Webpage (HTML) and try to transfer it, it says
it worked, but there is nothing on my site. I am so stressed & frustrated. I
managed to use the MS FrontPage Express when I had Win98, but now I have
WinXP. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The FTP programs I have now
are WS_FTP95 LE as well as Microsoft Picture It Photo Premium as well as a
slew of others. Again, thanks for any help!

I don't know what versions of Windows have to do with a
website on your server but I'm guessing that you didn't
FTP the files to the appropriate directory for your
server. (Commonly ...userdir/public_html)

If that doesn't sound right, please provide more info.

In my last reply, I stated that when I had Win98, I used FrontPage Express
and Web Publishing Wizard and had no problems. But, WinXP doesn't have those
programs, so I have no idea. Plus, I have DSL, but that shouldn't matter. I
have tried several different FTP programs, all say they transferred the
info., but nothing shows. I just don't know.
Thanks,
Mary

P.S. My ISP says to use "index.html" as your homepage, see below per their
instructions-

Personal Pages FTP Instructions:
TDS Internet Services Personal Pages have specific instructions for their
FTP accounts. Use the following Information when FTPing to the TDS Internet
Services Personal Pages Server:

Host Name:personalpages.tds.net
User ID: Your Dial-up User ID
Password: Your Dial-up Password

FTP Information should be entered as shown below:

Host Name - personalpages.tds.net
Host Type - Automatic detect
User ID - Your Dial-up User ID
Password - Your Dial-up Password
Account - BLANK
Remote Host - BLANK
Local PC - C:\Directory on your hardrive where your pages are located
Anonymous Login - Blank

"index.html" must be the name of your home page.

As the previous poster said, the most likely explanation is that you are
uploading to the wrong directory. Something that I have come across on some
servers though is that, when the webspace is first set up, a default.html
file is placed in the public directory and this must be deleted first, I
have found that, on occasions, it will not over-write with your own html
document. In your case this seems unlikely as your url gets a 404.

Dismiss your OS and connection type from the equation. The target
directories use a variety of names. WS_ftp will do fine. When you connect to
your webspace what directories/folders can you see there?

OK-I see 2 folders-images & index (the images are just sample clipart to see
if I can get it to go). In the WS_FTP program, it says at the bottom
(actions pane) 257 "/" is current directory. I have tried to make a HTML
file page (I create a webpage and save it as a HTML file) and tried to
upload that to no avail.
Thanks for your help.

Mary
which of those directories/folders are you uploading your file to?

I may be wrong but I think "/" is the root directory, upload your html file
to the 'index' folder. Post here when done with the url

It might help if you tell us what is shown as remote host? fear not, without
your user name/password there are no security implications

it's ok, I've been to the tds.net pages for info.

publish the page to a variety of places on the server, once it shows up you
can delete them one at a time and check the url, once the page disappears
you know that the last one was in the right place

OK-I redid it all. I made a new webpage, saved it as an html file, deleted
all the other stuff I had to transfer, did a clean transfer. It said it was
successful, but I still see nothing.

In the left hand pane of WS_FTP, you will see the files you want to upload.
Make sure that the Index is index.html, NOT index.htm If it is htm, use the
change name feature in WS_FTP to add the "l" at the end.

You mean, try "index" "default" and the like? Is that what you mean? Give it
a different name? Sorry-confusion consumes me right now.
Thanks-I DO appreciate all your kind help.

No, your host is clear of the necessity to use index.html, I meant publish
an identical page into different places on the web server

OK-I called tech support. See, Win98 has FrontPage Express that
automatically turns my pictures, etc. (my webpage I create) into a HTML file
and then Web Publishing Wizard uploads it. So, I need to get a HTML Editor,
I guess. Back to the drawing board. If I can't get it, I'm just going to go
to Geocities for a free one, the heck with this!
Thanks to all who tried to help.

Go to www.mozilla.org and download Mozilla 1.7.3 It comes with Composer, a
decent HTML editor, very similar to Front Page Express.

I'll give it a try. I downloaded HTML-Kit, but not so sure quite how to work
it-that is why I liked the FrontPage Express. Thanks Alias, appreciate all
the help I can get :)

Mary,

copy everything between the dotted lines to a txt file and save it as (all
files) 'index.html' and publish it to your web server, it will at least
clarify your uploading confusion a bit.
