Frustration Over Outlook Not Closing

For a while, when Outlook 2000 closed, it would occasionally keep
running in the background. Now when it is closed, it keeps running 100%
of the time. I have been through every newsgroup post and every site
that I can find that discusses this problem and have tried every
potential solution, including completely removing my antivirus software
and all add ins. Outlook never removes itself from memory.

My only idea at this point is to remove and reinstall Outlook in the
hopes that some unidentified hook will be broken and not reestablished
on reinstallation. Outlook was installed as part of Office Pro. What is
the procedure for removing Outlook without losing my settings? What is
the safest way to reinstall?

Is it likely that this exercise will address the problem? The operating
systems is Windows 2000 with all service packs and updates.

it's highly unlikely to fix it.

have you looked at the list of applications at
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/close.htm? They should give you a clue of
what types of programs can cause it.

Yes, I have been to that page many times. While I have had one or more
of the applications installed previously, none is installed now. That's
why I am wondering if there is a left over hook into Outlook.

Is there any way to search the registry for the hooks?

outlook stores add-in info in the local machine and current users key here:
....\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\

if you don't use exchange server, someone reported good luck disabling the
exchange extensions - those are in tools, options, other, advanced, add-ins.
That should have absolutely no effect on outlook closing but maybe it
conflicts with something else on the system.

Well, like Diane said: Tools, Options, Other, Advanced, Add-ins and disable
it there, if you're running outlook 2k3 or lower.
