hi to all knowlegeable folk i have a problem i have been dealing with
for quite some time now

lately i have noticed my PC slowing down ALOT, even when its running
relatively few tasks, like 3 or 4 internet explorers maybe a file
sharing prog. and a windows explorer open. all this ran slick and
smooth for quite a while, now doing the same combination of things, it
gets really bogged down when you change from one task to another and
sometimes it sits there and thinks for like 10 seconds before it will
switch to a windows explorer or internet explorer...

2nd problem, for what ever reason from time to time my pc does not
like my 120GIG WD 7200RPM EIDE drive, sometimes it wont identify
it....?????
it identifys my other drives all the time. i even had the 120
replaced, and it still acts the same....

heres my specs.....
256 MEGS pc2700 ram (bought in 2003)
Biostar M7VIT PRO motherboard (bought in 2003)
ATHLON XP 2600+ processor (bought in 2003)
120GB western digital 7200RPM EIDE ATA100 with 8MB cache (replaced 1
time)
30GB westerndigital 5400RPM ATA33 (bought is 2000)
9.1GB SEAGATE 10,000RPM cheetah SCSI drive (bought in 1999)
43GB 5400RPM SCSI drive (made in 1998 bought in 2003)
LITE-ON DVD recorder EIDE (bought in 2004)

any ideas would be helpful

thanks!

Slow down sounds like spyware/malware. Since you don't mention it at
all I'm thinking you should get the award winning Spybot Search and
Destroy(free). They update it often. With out the new updates every
day or two, it's much less effective.

When all those drives spin up at once the PSU doesn't have enough
juice for all of them. When the voltage drops enough the drive isn't
detected, same as if the power connector was unplugged. Nothing uses
up power like a 7200 HDD. Getting an external enclosure will fix that,
since they run off their own PSU.

if its the power supply, you can replace it easily with a more powerful one.
See how many watts the one you have puts out, and then get a larger one. I
think that is easier than using a case with it's own power supply in it.
Probalby cheaper, too. You should be able to find a 400 watt job for less
than $50.

try some online virus scanners along with the malware stuff. You may have a
virus\worm\trojan\etc. they can fix them in real time. They really work,
too. I got infected a couple of weeks ago, and the online stuff fixed most
of it. Grisoft's vscanner fixed the rest. It's free, it's downloadable
from their website, and is only 60kb long. You put it on a floppy and run
it from safe mode.
