Frustrated - MM says I am missing codec

Trying to enjoy my new Sony Handycam and want to take my first test video
into Movie Maker. When I go to capture from camera it says it can't find the
camera and make sure it is connected properly, which it is. So I used the
software that came with the camera and it uploaded okay onto the PC.
But....Going back into MM, when I try to import the video into MM it says I
am missing a required codec. I DL'd DivX per someone's advice but that
doesn't help.

I'm having the same frustration. New Sony handycam, software that came with
the camera works fine but MM2 won't see the camera and when I try to import
mpeg files I get an error saying "C:\Documents and Settings\DSteed\My
Documents\My Videos\2007_12 Christmas\20071225125750 (1).mpg could not be
imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from". Once I got
a message stating that there was a codec problem. I've read some posts that
indicate that although mm2 says that it will import a mpeg it won't and that
you have to use other software to convert the file to an AVI file. This seems
like way too much work when Sonic MYDVD will import the files. I've never
used these programs but it seems like a $50 investment to upgrade to the ful
MYDVD program would be worth it if I have to use three different programs to
create and burn a movie on a DVD. Please help before I spend $50 and abandon
MM2.

Dave, someone told me to open the video in Windows Media Player, and save it
as an avi file. I did that and Movie Maker now recognizes it fine. But I
still have problems with MM connecting to my camera to DL from it. I'm
determined not to buy another program to make this work!
