Frozen out of excel

I am a moderately experienced user. My favorite program of all time is
Excel - I have a problem I cannot solve. Whenever I open Excel (2000)
my computer freezes. I have tried repairing and removing and
reinstalling Office - no luck. This is the message error I receive:
EXCEL caused a general protection fault
in module USER.EXE at 000b:00000108.

XL2000: Startup Switches for Microsoft Excel 2000

try opening excel in safe mode.

First, find your menu customizations file and rename it. It should have an
..xlb extension. Something like excel.xlb or userid.xlb. Change it to
something like excel.hld (with excel closed). Find your xlstart directory
and remove any files you find there (move them someplace else).

This tells you where your startup folders are:

HOW TO: Use Excel Startup Folders in Excel 2000

Then try to open excel. If that doesn't work, find your temp directory and
remove any files you find there (with excel closed).

if that doesn't work then:

uninstall Excel

Install again to a different directory.
