Frozen Desktop

I hope someone can help me.

I run Windows XP Pro on a Compaq Presario M2000, and after Windows launches
nothing on the desktop is clickable. Not the icons or documents on the
desktop, not the Start Menu, not the Taskbar.

The mouse appears fine because it scrolls on the page; nothing I click --
right click also -- launches.

Things seem to work in Safe Mode, and restoring Windows to the last known
settings that worked does not solve the problem.

Anyone have an idea?

One of several possible causes of freeze-ups is faulty memory (RAM). Try
Googling for memtest, download and run that. Otherwise, if you have two
memory modules in your computer try running each one on their own to isolate
a faulty module. It is also advisable to scan for spyware and viruses.
