I need to construct hyperlinks which don't open a file but
open a folder containing a number of files. The folder could open in either
Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer. I'm sure this is possible but I'm not
sure exactly how it's done.
I would appreciate any help you could provide

Create the URL as http://www.yourdomain.com/foldername/
then contact your host to allow the folder(s) to be browsed.

I tried it on my web site and I can browse everything there!
How do I stop a user from being able to do that?

Contact your host and ask them to turn off the directory browsing.

Contact your host to NOT allow the folder(s) to be browsed...

Neither a follower

Put a default page in the folder - default page will have the same file name
as your home page.

which folder would you be opening - the C: drive of the User's computer?

you can do this, but only with a folder on the web server.

link to the folder, that has no 'index.htm' page in it, and it will list the
contents of the directory.

Only if the server host has directory listing enabled
