Frontpage folders what is their correct location?

S

Stan Hilliard

I started a web in 1997. At that time I moved some of the FrontPage
files around so that the folder view would not be "cluttered" and
would "look good". Apparently FP97 and FP98 were permissive about it
because the web ran OK.

Now I am having problems and, on a hunch, I want to move all FP files
back to where FP expects them. But it has been so long that I don't
remember what files I moved and where I moved them from.

Can someone please advise me?

Stan,

The best option would be to copy the current web to a folder on your desktop, then create a new web
and then drag-n-drop the content from the folder on your desktop into this new web, this will allow
FP to setup the web as it would expect it to be set up

Several more questions -- just to be sure.

1. Can I drag the whole disk-web in one step or can I do it folder by
folder or file by file?

2. Is FP smart enough to move standard FP files or folders if I have
previously moved them?

3. Does drag-and-drop of a disc-web cause more updating than
importing? And should the disk-web initially be exported to the
desktop, or published to it?

4. Should the disk-web be dragged onto an empty web or a full
functioning web?

I would drag-n-drop the entire content of the folder (not the actual folder itself) into a new web
or subweb.

FP will not import the prior _vti folders, instead it will create new ones as needed.

Importing and drag-n-drop does the exact same thing, just do no used the Import Web function of FP.
You need to go into Windows Explorer and copy the current web to your desktop, then from within FP
delete the current web folder, then do #1 above.

If the web already has content, I would create subweb first.

I tried this but I ran into a problem.

1) I published my working subweb to a new subweb.

2) In Windows Explorer, I dragged a copy of the new subweb folder to
the desk top.

3) In FP2003, I deleted the contents of the new subweb completely --
making it an empty web.

4) I selected with ctrl-A all contents of the desktop folder in one
step onto the empty subweb in FrontPage.

Note: ctrl-A produced the message "this folder contains 4 hidden
files. If you want to select these files as well, enable viewing of
hidden files in the folder options control panel." I did.

5) Frontpage produced 13 message before the server connection timed
out. The messages alternated between these two:

"No file found to input."

"Directories containing web site configuration information will not be
imported."

Repeated attempts to drag and drop produce the identical result. What
is happening and how can I make it work?

Thanks Tom, I appreciate the help.

My two FP searches have been working perfectly for a week now. Also,
recalculating hyperlinks in the subweb does not corrupt its search.

I am not absolutely sure of the cause of the problems -- as during the
period that I was cleaning up the web with FrontPage my IPP changed my
site to another server. The IPP thinks that he had a file system
problem on the original server and "there were some corrupted files
and permissions on the disk."
